Technology for Working from Home

We all saw this one coming. After much of the workforce was forced to adapt to work-from-home operations in 2020, many companies will continue remote work into 2021. According to Upwork’s “Future of Workforce Pulse Report,” 1 in 4 Americans will be working remotely in the new year.

With that said, we’ll continue to see smart technology and networking solutions that support at-home work, from wireless mouses and keypads to high-resolution webcams, to robust video conferencing software. In the same vein, home networking equipment will continue to advance to support greater uptime, capacity, reliability, and security—as well as to support the new wireless standard Wi-Fi 6.

Technology for Better Health

A trend that grew tremendously in 2020, technology for better health will only continue to expand in the new year. As technology advances, more homeowners are turning to solutions such as human-centric lighting control, smart air filtration systems, and more as aids to holistic and prescribed remedies for improved wellbeing.

From advanced wearable tech that tracks your vitals, to wellness systems that clean your air and water, to biophilic spaces that simulate the outdoors, smart homes will increasingly become self-care hubs in 2021 and beyond. They may not replace existing healthcare services, but they’ll promote a healthier environment at home and perhaps reduce pressure on the healthcare system.

“There’s a Smart Device for That”

Unsurprisingly, you can expect more home devices to turn to the “smart” side in 2021. Even now, the sky is the limit when it comes to smart home devices, and we don’t see that slowing down soon. In fact, by 2022, the average smart home is expected to have around 500 connected intelligent devices, according to the technology consultancy Plextek.

Beyond the expansion of smart surveillance and home speakers, we expect to see everything from smarter kitchen and bathroom appliances to smarter gardening systems. As a result, device connectivity and how well third-party devices work together and integrate with home control systems will become even more important in the new year, too.
